How do you play Attachment Style Quiz?

An attachment style quiz for couples has both partners privately rate statements about how they respond to closeness, distance, reassurance and conflict, then compare. It is not a diagnostic instrument and assigns no label — its value is giving a name to a recurring loop, such as one partner withdrawing while the other pursues.

How to play

  1. Score each statement about yourself, one to ten, privately.
  2. Do not discuss while scoring.
  3. Reveal together and look at the whole picture rather than any single number.
  4. Find the pair where you are furthest apart. That is your loop.
  5. Talk about what each of you needs when that loop starts.

Why couples love this game

It names a pattern rather than a person. Once a couple can say "this is the bit where I go quiet and you check in more, and both of those make the other one worse", the argument stops being about who is unreasonable and starts being about a loop you are both in.

Attachment theory is the most useful idea in popular relationship psychology and the most frequently mangled. The short version: people differ in how they respond to closeness and to distance, those differences were largely set early, and two people with different responses can produce a very predictable loop.

This is not a diagnostic instrument and does not assign you a label. It is fourteen statements you each rate privately, covering reassurance, space, conflict and independence — and then compare.

What it gives you is not a category. It is a vocabulary for a pattern you have both been in for years without a name for it.

Example things you rate

  • I worry my partner will lose interest
  • I need reassurance more often than I ask for it
  • I pull away when things get too close
  • I find it easy to depend on my partner
  • Silence from my partner makes me anxious
  • I would rather handle problems alone

The full game has 14 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

  • Couples with a recurring dynamic they cannot name
  • Anyone who has read about attachment and wants to apply it
  • Before or alongside counselling
  • Long-distance couples, where distance responses show up sharply

Tips to make it better

  • Score honestly rather than aspirationally.
  • Do not use the result as a label or an excuse. "That is just my attachment style" is not a defence.
  • The biggest gap is the useful one. Start there.
  • This is not a clinical assessment. Treat it as vocabulary, not diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What are the attachment styles?

Popular models describe secure, anxious and avoidant patterns, plus a mixed one. This quiz deliberately does not assign you a category — the labels get used as excuses, and the useful part is the pattern between two people rather than a badge for each.

Can attachment style change?

The research suggests responses shift with experience and with a stable relationship, which is a more useful framing than treating a label as fixed.

Is this a real psychological test?

No. It is a structured conversation using ideas from attachment theory. If you want a validated instrument, that is a clinical setting rather than a games site.
