How do you play Married Couples Questions?

Married Couples Questions is a deck written for couples years into a relationship, asking about how each has changed, what has quietly been given up, and what has stopped being discussed. Both partners answer each card. Eight to twelve cards fills an evening.

How to play

  1. Pick an evening with nothing after it.
  2. Both answer each card, in no particular order.
  3. Do not rush. Eight to twelve cards is a full evening.
  4. Where an answer surprises you, follow it rather than moving on.
  5. End on the last card. It is the one worth having.

Why couples love this game

It works on the specific blind spot long relationships develop: you both stop asking because you assume you know. Half the questions here produce an answer that would have been true for years and has simply never been said aloud, because nobody thought to ask.

The problem years in is not that you have run out of things to say. It is that you have run out of new things to ask โ€” the conversation is fine, it is just the same conversation.

This deck assumes history. It asks about the years you have already had, the versions of each other you have both become, and the things you stopped mentioning at some point without either of you deciding to.

It is warm rather than heavy, but it does not flinch. A few of these will produce answers you have genuinely never heard.

Example questions

  • What is something about me that has changed that you like?
  • What do you miss about the early version of us?
  • What is better now than it was then?
  • What is something you have stopped asking me about?
  • When did you last feel proud to be with me?
  • What is a thing I do now that I did not used to?

The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

  • Married and long-term couples
  • Anniversaries
  • Couples who feel comfortable but a bit flat
  • Anyone whose last real conversation about the relationship was a while ago

Tips to make it better

  • Do not treat it as a state of the union. That is what Relationship Check-In is for.
  • Follow the surprising answers. That is where the value is concentrated.
  • Split across two evenings if it gets rich. There is no reason to finish in one go.
  • Do it annually. The answers move more than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

What questions should married couples ask each other?

The ones you have stopped asking. "What is something you want that you have quietly decided not to ask for?" tends to land hardest, because in a long relationship there is usually an answer and it has usually never been said.

Is this the same as a relationship check-in?

No. A check-in is structured, scheduled, and aimed at agreeing changes. This is a conversation deck โ€” warmer, less formal, and with nothing to resolve at the end.

How often should we play this?

Once a year is about right. The answers shift more between years than most couples expect, which is most of the interest.
