How do you play Finish My Sentence?
Finish My Sentence shows a half-finished sentence such as "The fastest way to annoy me is…" One partner guesses how the other would complete it, then hears the real ending. Sentence stems produce faster, less-edited answers than direct questions because completion is a reflex.
How to play
- Read the sentence stem out loud.
- The guesser completes it as they think their partner would.
- The partner then completes it honestly.
- Score it right, close, or nowhere near.
- Swap every card.
Why couples love this game
Sentence stems bypass the polite answer. Asking "what annoys you?" gets a diplomatic reply; leaving "the fastest way to annoy me is…" hanging gets the true one, because completion is a reflex and diplomacy is a decision.
A sentence stem appears — "The thing I find hardest about my job is…" — and you guess how your partner would finish it. Then they finish it properly.
Sentence stems produce different answers to questions. A question invites a considered response; a half-finished sentence invites completion, which comes out faster and less edited.
It is quick, it moves, and the gap between your guess and their ending is usually funnier than either.
Example questions
- The thing I find hardest about my week is…
- If I had one more hour every day I would…
- The fastest way to annoy me is…
- The thing I miss most about being younger is…
- I feel most like myself when…
- The nicest thing you do for me is…
The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.
Who this game is best for
- Couples who want something quicker than a full quiz
- Warming up before a deeper game
- Long-distance calls
- Anyone who finds direct questions stilted
Tips to make it better
- The partner must not adjust their ending to match the guess. Very tempting, ruins it.
- First completion only. If they say "well, actually", that is the second answer.
- Keep it moving. This deck dies if you discuss every card.
- Play it before Deep Questions — the stems loosen people up.
Frequently asked questions
Why sentence stems instead of questions?
A question invites a considered answer; an unfinished sentence invites completion. The second one comes out faster and with less editing, which is generally more honest.
How is it scored?
Right, close, or nowhere near. Three points of granularity is enough — anything finer turns into negotiation.
Is it good for long distance?
Yes. Only the reader needs a screen, so it works on a voice call.
