How do you play Truth or Drink?
Truth or Drink gives each player the choice of answering a question honestly or drinking instead. Vague answers count as skips. The optional escape route is what produces honesty — declining becomes conspicuous, so most people answer. It works equally well with a forfeit substituted for alcohol.
How to play
- Take turns. The person whose turn it is either answers or drinks.
- No half answers. A vague answer counts as a skip and you drink anyway.
- The other person may ask one follow-up. Then move on.
- Works with anything unappealing instead of alcohol — the mechanic is the choice, not the drink.
- Stop whenever. There is no end condition.
Why couples love this game
The escape route is what produces the honesty. When answering is compulsory people give careful non-answers; when they can simply opt out, opting out becomes conspicuous — and most people would rather tell the truth than sit there having visibly declined.
Truth or Drink works on a paradox: giving people an easy way out makes them far more likely to answer. Nobody is forced, so nobody gets defensive — and once you have watched your partner drink rather than answer, you both know something anyway.
The questions escalate. The first few are easy, the last few are the reason the drink exists.
It works completely without alcohol. Substitute anything unappealing — a forfeit, a chore, a spoonful of something — and the mechanic is identical.
Example truths and dares
- What is the biggest lie you have told me?
- Who was the last person you found attractive that was not me?
- What is something you have done in bed that I would be genuinely surprised by?
- Drink. Then say one true thing anyway.
- Drink, and your partner gets a free follow-up question later.
- Drink. The question stays unanswered.
The full game has 72 of these, shuffled every time you play.
Who this game is best for
- A night in with a drink
- Couples who already know each other well
- Groups, where the declining is more visible
- Video calls — it works fine remotely
Tips to make it better
- A vague answer is a skip. Enforce that or the game collapses.
- Please play this sensibly. It is a game, not a drinking competition.
- It works completely dry. Substitute a forfeit and nothing is lost.
- Agree before you start that nothing said here gets raised tomorrow.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Truth or Drink?
Take turns drawing a question. You either answer it honestly or you drink instead. A vague or evasive answer counts as a skip and you drink anyway.
Can you play without alcohol?
Yes, and it loses nothing. Substitute any unappealing forfeit — the mechanic is the visible choice to decline, not the drink itself.
How far do the questions go?
They escalate deliberately, and the later ones are why the escape route exists. This is a 🌶️ deck meant for couples who already trust each other.
