How do you play Empty Nest Questions?

Empty nest questions help couples reconnect after their children leave home by asking who each person is outside the parenting role, what they set aside during those years, and what they want the next twenty to contain. Most couples who struggle at this stage never explicitly acknowledged that the arrangement changed.

How to play

  1. Take an evening with the house to yourselves, which is now most of them.
  2. Both answer every question.
  3. Do not turn it into a review of the parenting years. That is two cards, not twenty.
  4. The last card is the point. Do it properly and put something in the diary.
  5. Eight to ten is a session.

Why couples love this game

The couples who struggle here are usually the ones who never explicitly acknowledged that the arrangement changed. Naming it β€” and then answering what you each actually want now β€” turns a vague low-grade sadness into a list of things you could go and do this year.

For two decades the conversation had a subject, and the subject has moved out. What is left is a lot of quiet and two people who have been extremely good colleagues and are slightly out of practice at anything else.

This deck is about that. It asks who each of you is now, what you set aside during the parenting years, and what you would actually like the next twenty to contain.

It is optimistic. This is generally the stretch with the most freedom in it, and the couples who do well are the ones who treat it as a beginning rather than a subtraction.

Example questions

  • How are you actually finding the quiet?
  • What do you miss most, and what do you not miss at all?
  • Who are you when you are not somebody's parent?
  • What did you set aside during those years?
  • What would you like to pick back up?
  • What did we stop doing as a couple that we should restart?

The full game has 20 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

  • The first year after the last one leaves
  • Couples who feel like colleagues without a project
  • Anyone facing a lot of unexpected free time
  • Milestone anniversaries in this stretch
Married

Tips to make it better

  • Do not spend the whole evening on the parenting retrospective. Two questions, then move.
  • The "what did you set aside" answer is often the most important thing said all year.
  • Book something before you close the tab. This is a stage where inertia wins easily.
  • Retirement Questions is the natural next deck.

Frequently asked questions

How do couples reconnect after the kids leave?

By naming that the arrangement has changed rather than waiting for it to feel normal. The practical version is picking up something each of you set aside, and putting one thing in the diary before the inertia sets in.

Is it normal to feel like strangers?

Extremely. Twenty years of conversation had a shared subject and that subject has moved out. It is a practice problem far more often than a compatibility one.

What comes after this deck?

Retirement Questions for Couples, if that stage is approaching, or Dream Life if you want the optimistic long-range version.
