How do you play Couple Superlatives?

Couple Superlatives hands out yearbook-style awards — most likely to be arrested for something stupid, best at pretending to listen — with both partners pointing at the winner simultaneously. Agreement triggers a ten-second acceptance speech; disagreement gives each partner thirty seconds to reject the nomination.

How to play

  1. Read the award out loud.
  2. Both point at the winner on three.
  3. If you agree, the winner gives a ten-second acceptance speech.
  4. If you disagree, you each get thirty seconds to reject the nomination.
  5. The speeches are compulsory. That is the game.

Why couples love this game

The acceptance speech rule turns a pointing game into a performance. Without it this is just Most Likely To with worse categories; with it, every card produces something. It is also the best possible thing to play immediately after a serious conversation.

School yearbook superlatives, except there are two of you and all the categories are mildly insulting.

Each card is an award. You both decide who wins it, and if you disagree you each make a thirty-second acceptance or rejection speech. The speeches are why this game exists.

It is pure silliness with no redeeming educational value, which makes it the right thing to play after something heavy.

Example questions

The full game has 24 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Tips to make it better

  • Enforce the speeches. Skipping them removes the entire point.
  • Nobody is allowed to be offended. These are yearbook awards.
  • Great with two couples — four nominees makes the categories much funnier.
  • Do not follow this with a serious game. It goes the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

What are good superlatives for couples?

Ones that are mildly insulting but obviously affectionate. "Most likely to be scammed" works; anything that touches a real insecurity does not.

Why the acceptance speeches?

Because without them this is just a pointing game. The speech is where the actual comedy is, and it is the only rule worth enforcing.

Is this good for a group?

Very. Four nominees makes every category funnier, and the rejection speeches get considerably more theatrical with an audience.
