How do you play Guess the Memory?
Guess the Memory is a couples game where one partner picks a shared memory fitting a category — a time we argued about something stupid, a journey that went wrong — and gives three clues from most obscure to most obvious. The other guesses, scoring three points down to one depending on which clue they needed.
How to play
- One person draws a card and thinks of a specific memory that fits.
- Give three clues in order, most obscure first.
- Your partner guesses after each clue. Three points on the first, two on the second, one on the third.
- Swap every card.
- The last card is not scored. Just answer it.
Why couples love this game
The clue structure forces you to remember detail. To make a hard first clue you have to recall something specific and small, which is exactly the kind of thing that has otherwise dropped out of the shared story. Couples routinely resurface memories neither had thought about in years.
One of you thinks of a specific shared memory. You give three clues, in order, from most obscure to most obvious. Your partner guesses.
The prompts here are categories rather than questions — "a memory involving food", "a time one of us was embarrassed" — so you pick the actual memory yourself. That is what makes it replayable: the deck is the same, the memories never are.
It is the most affectionate competitive game on the site. You are technically scoring points, but mostly you are going through your entire history together.
Example questions
- A memory involving food.
- A time one of us was embarrassed.
- A memory from the first month.
- A time we laughed until it hurt.
- A memory involving terrible weather.
- A journey that went wrong.
The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.
Who this game is best for
- Anniversaries
- Couples with a few years of history
- Long-distance calls
- A quiet night that needs warming up
Tips to make it better
- Make the first clue genuinely hard. An easy first clue wastes the card.
- No clue can name the place or the date.
- Go through your photos together afterwards. It doubles the length of the evening in a good way.
- The final card deserves a proper answer from both of you.
Frequently asked questions
How do you score Guess the Memory?
Three points if they get it on the first clue, two on the second, one on the third. That scoring is what makes people give a genuinely hard first clue.
Is it replayable?
More than anything else here. The cards are categories, not memories — you supply those, and they are different every time.
How much history do we need?
A year or so. Below that you will run out of memories for some categories.
