How do you play Cooking Together Challenge?
Cooking together challenges give couples a timed constraint in the kitchen — cooking a course each with no consulting, one partner blindfolded taking instructions, or cooking an entire meal in silence. Cooperative rounds require coordination; competitive rounds end with the loser washing up.
How to play
- Pick a challenge and check you have roughly what it needs.
- Start the timer. The clock is the fun part.
- Cooperative rounds: you both win or you both eat something strange.
- Competitive rounds: the loser washes up. Non-negotiable.
- Eat whatever happens. That is the deal.
Why couples love this game
Cooking is one of very few things couples do together that has a physical outcome and a real constraint. The silent round in particular reveals more about how you two coordinate than any amount of talking about it — most couples fail it in about ninety seconds.
Cooking together is either the most romantic thing a couple does or a twenty-minute demonstration of incompatible working styles. Usually both, in that order, on the same evening.
These challenges lean into it. Some are cooperative and force you to actually coordinate; others are competitive and give you a reason to be smug about a sauce.
Everything uses ordinary kitchen ingredients and none of it requires you to be good at cooking. Several are considerably better if you are not.
Example challenges
- Each cook one course. No consulting, no peeking (1800s)
- One person is blindfolded. The other gives instructions only (600s)
- Make a meal from only what is already in the house (1800s)
- Neither of you may speak. Cook the whole thing in silence (1200s)
- One of you can only use their left hand (600s)
- Same ingredients, two dishes, no discussion. Then swap plates (1200s)
The full game has 16 of these, shuffled every time you play.
Who this game is best for
- A Friday night in
- Couples who cook separately and eat together
- Anniversaries, with the first-date meal card
- Anyone who wants a date night that produces dinner
Tips to make it better
- Check you have the ingredients before you start the clock.
- The silent round is the best one. Nobody manages it.
- Loser washes up. Agree it before you start or it will be relitigated.
- Eat the result regardless. That is the whole bargain.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cooking challenge for couples?
The silent round. Cooking a whole meal without speaking exposes how you actually coordinate, and almost no couple lasts more than ninety seconds before someone breaks.
Do we need to be good at cooking?
No. Several of these are considerably funnier if you are not, and the only rule is that you eat whatever happens.
Do we need special ingredients?
No. Every challenge works with ordinary kitchen ingredients, and one of them specifically requires using only what is already in the house.
