How do you play Future Us?

Future Us is a couples game covering the practical future questions people postpone — where to live, kids, whose career takes priority, how to handle money, and caring for ageing parents. Both partners answer each card before discussing. The goal is locating disagreements early, not resolving them in one sitting.

How to play

  1. Pick a calm evening with no time pressure. This is not a quick one.
  2. One card at a time. Both answer before you discuss.
  3. Say what you actually think, not the answer that avoids friction.
  4. "I do not know" is fine. "Whatever you want" is not.
  5. Do not try to resolve everything. Note the gaps and come back to them.

Why couples love this game

Because the alternative is having these conversations under deadline. Almost every couple who has fought about money, or a move, or kids, was having a first conversation about it at exactly the moment a decision was due. Doing it early, calmly, with no decision attached, is enormously easier.

Dream Life is the optimistic version of this conversation. Future Us is the practical one — money, kids, whose career moves, how close to whose family, what happens if one of you gets an offer somewhere else.

These are the questions couples reliably postpone until a decision forces them, at which point they get had badly, under pressure, at the worst possible time.

Nothing here needs resolving tonight. Knowing where you each stand is the whole win.

Example questions

  • Where do you want to be living in five years — honestly, not diplomatically?
  • How do you feel about kids right now, today?
  • If we had them, how would we want to split the first year?
  • Whose career takes priority if they ever conflict?
  • How close to your family do you want to live? How close to mine?
  • What would you do if you got a great offer in another city?

The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

  • Couples getting serious
  • Anyone considering moving in, marrying, or relocating
  • Long-distance couples deciding what closing the gap looks like
  • Married couples whose assumptions are a decade old

Tips to make it better

  • Answer honestly rather than agreeably. A diplomatic answer here is worse than a difficult one.
  • You do not have to resolve anything tonight. Finding the gap is the goal.
  • Split it over two evenings if it gets heavy. There is no prize for finishing.
  • Write down anything you agree on. You will both remember it differently otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What serious questions should couples ask before getting more committed?

Money, children, location, and whose career moves first. Those four cause most of the genuinely hard conversations, and most couples have only ever discussed them in headlines.

What if we disagree on something big?

Better to find out now than during a decision. Note it, do not try to settle it tonight, and come back when neither of you is in the middle of a game.

Is this too heavy for a normal evening?

It is the heaviest deck on the site, deliberately. If you want the optimistic version of the same conversation, play Dream Life instead.
