How do you play Gratitude Game?

The Gratitude Game is a nightly ritual where each partner names three things out loud before sleep, with a rotating category each night so it does not become repetitive. It is deliberately limited to about ninety seconds, because larger nightly rituals reliably fail within a month.

How to play

  1. One card a night, before sleep.
  2. Three things each. Out loud, not written.
  3. No explaining or justifying. Name it and move on.
  4. Repeats are allowed, but try to find a new one each time.
  5. Ninety seconds. Do not let it become an activity.

Why couples love this game

It survives. Every ambitious nightly ritual dies inside a month because it needs energy nobody has at eleven at night β€” ninety seconds needs none, so it is still happening in year three. And the accumulated effect of hearing what your partner noticed each day is much larger than the effort suggests.

This is the smallest game on the site and the only one designed to be played every day. Three things each, out loud, before sleep. It takes ninety seconds.

The size is the whole design. Every couple who has tried to institute a nightly ritual has failed at it because the ritual was too big β€” a gratitude journal, a proper check-in, twenty minutes of anything. Ninety seconds survives a bad week.

The cards rotate the category so you are not naming the same three things every night, which is what kills every version of this within a fortnight.

Example questions

  • Three good things about today. Any size.
  • Three things you are grateful for that cost nothing.
  • Three things about this week you would not change.
  • Three people you are glad exist.
  • Three things about our home.
  • Three things your body did for you today.

The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Tips to make it better

  • Keep it to ninety seconds. Letting it grow is how it dies.
  • Out loud, not written. Writing turns it into homework.
  • Do it on the bad days especially. That is when it does the most.
  • If you miss a week, just start again. There is no streak to break.

Frequently asked questions

How do couples build a gratitude habit?

By making it far smaller than feels meaningful. Ninety seconds survives a bad week; a gratitude journal does not, which is why almost nobody is still doing theirs.

Why out loud rather than written?

Writing turns it into homework and removes the point, which is that your partner hears what you noticed. Speaking it takes a fraction of the effort and does considerably more.

What if we miss a few nights?

Start again. There is deliberately no streak, because streaks turn a pleasant ninety seconds into an obligation with guilt attached.
