How do you play Yes or No Questions?

Yes or No Questions for couples allows only two answers with no explaining, qualifying or "it depends". Both partners answer simultaneously and the game tallies agreement. Removing the ability to soften an answer is what produces honesty; discussion is allowed only after the round ends.

How to play

  1. Read the question. Both answer at the same time.
  2. One word only. No explaining, no qualifying, no "well".
  3. Tap what you each said. The tally tracks agreement.
  4. You may discuss any question after the round is over. Not during.
  5. Either of you can skip. Skipping is not a no.

Why couples love this game

The prohibition on elaborating is the entire game. An open question lets anyone soften the answer into something that means nothing; a forced yes takes the softening away, and the two seconds of silence after somebody says it out loud is where the whole thing happens.

Every question here has exactly two allowed answers, and "it depends" is not one of them. That single constraint does something no open question can: it removes the escape route.

Most people, asked whether they have ever been jealous, will produce a paragraph that never quite lands on either side. Asked to say yes or no with nothing after it, they say yes — and then you both sit with it.

You can talk about any of them afterwards. During the round, one word only.

Example questions

  • Have you ever wanted me in a room we should have left?
  • Do you notice when I look at your mouth while you talk?
  • Have you ever worn something hoping I would want it off you?
  • Would you let me kiss your neck in public if I started?
  • Have you pictured the two of us in a shower this week?
  • Do you want me to initiate more than I do?

The full game has 44 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

  • Couples who talk around things
  • A fast, slightly risky round before something lighter
  • Video calls
  • Groups, if you skip the ones about us

Tips to make it better

  • Enforce the one-word rule ruthlessly. Everything depends on it.
  • Answer simultaneously — waiting to hear the other first defeats the point.
  • Discuss afterwards, not during. Note which ones you want to come back to.
  • A skip is a legitimate move and does not mean the answer was yes.

Frequently asked questions

What are good yes or no questions to ask your partner?

Ones people would normally answer with a paragraph. "Have you ever been genuinely jealous about me?" is easy to talk around and very hard to answer in one word without being honest.

Can we explain our answers?

Afterwards, yes. During the round, no — the whole mechanism is removing the escape route that qualifying provides.

What if a question is too much?

Skip it. A skip is a legitimate move and explicitly does not mean the answer was yes.
