How do you play Couple Debate?
Couple Debate assigns each partner one side of a trivial argument — pineapple on pizza, toilet roll direction — with no choosing which side you get. Each person argues for two minutes and whoever concedes or runs out of material first loses. It works for two people or a group.
How to play
- The card comes up with two positions.
- Whoever tapped Next gets the second option. You do not choose your side.
- Two minutes each to argue it. Set a timer.
- The loser is whoever concedes, laughs, or runs out of material first.
- No agreeing with each other. That is a forfeit.
Why couples love this game
Arguing a side you do not believe is a completely different experience from arguing one you do — nobody is defensive, so you both go much harder. It is also weirdly informative: how someone constructs an argument about pineapple is roughly how they construct one about anything.
A debate game where the subjects are deliberately stupid. Pineapple on pizza. Whether the toilet roll goes over or under. Whether it is acceptable to reply to a voice note with a text.
You each take a side — you do not get to pick the one you agree with — and argue it for two minutes. The point is not to be right. The point is that arguing a position you do not hold is extremely funny and reveals more about how someone argues than what they think.
It is the most competitive game on the site that has no scoring system worth the name.
Example choices
- Pick your side Pineapple belongs on pizza — or Pineapple is a crime?
- Pick your side Toilet roll goes over — or Toilet roll goes under?
- Pick your side Cereal is a soup — or Cereal is obviously not a soup?
- Pick your side Replying to a voice note with text is fine — or It is deeply rude?
- Pick your side The bed must be made every day — or Making the bed is pointless?
- Pick your side Films are better than TV series — or Series are better than films?
The full game has 22 of these, shuffled every time you play.
Who this game is best for
- Couples who enjoy winding each other up
- Double dates and group nights
- Long drives
- Anyone who wants a competitive game with no maths in it
Tips to make it better
- You do not pick your side. This rule is the entire game.
- Two minutes each, timed. Untimed debates about toilet roll have no natural end.
- Commit properly. A half-hearted defence is a forfeit.
- Keep it to trivial subjects. Do not import a real disagreement into this.
Frequently asked questions
Why can you not pick your own side?
Because arguing a position you actually hold makes you defensive, and defensive people argue badly. Being handed the wrong side is what makes it funny and what makes people go hard.
Who wins?
Whoever concedes, laughs, or runs out of things to say first. There is no scoring and there does not need to be.
Can we debate real disagreements?
Strongly advise against it. The game works because nothing is at stake — import something real and you are just having the argument with a timer on it.
