How do you play Firsts Together?

Firsts Together is a romantic couples game where both partners recall and compare their memory of relationship milestones — first message, first date, first kiss, first argument. The differences between two versions of the same event are the point. It runs 20 to 35 minutes and works over video call.

How to play

  1. Both answer every card, but do not interrupt each other's version.
  2. Compare afterwards. The differences are the interesting part.
  3. Add detail. What you were wearing, what the weather was doing, who spoke first.
  4. Look up old photos and messages as you go — it makes it much better.
  5. Skip anything that has a sad answer unless you want to go there.

Why couples love this game

Nobody remembers their relationship accurately. You each carry a slightly different film of the same events, and playing this is the only time most couples ever compare them. The gaps are consistently funnier and more affecting than either version alone.

This is the gentlest game on the site and the one most likely to end with someone getting a bit emotional about a car park.

You go through your firsts — first message, first date, first time you met each other's friends — and compare what you each remember. The differences are the good part. Two people almost never remember the same first date.

It requires nothing except that you have a shared history, which makes it the easiest thing to suggest on an anniversary.

Example questions

  • The first message. Who sent it, and what did it say?
  • The first time you saw me in person — what did you notice first about my face or the way I stood?
  • Our first date. Walk through it from your side — including the moment you wanted to be closer.
  • The first time you told someone about me. Who, and what did you say?
  • Our first kiss. Where were you standing, and what do you remember of my mouth?
  • The first time you thought this might be serious.

The full game has 40 of these, shuffled every time you play.

Who this game is best for

Tips to make it better

  • Get the old messages out. Scrolling back to the first ones while you play is the single best upgrade to this game.
  • Do not correct each other. Two versions is the point.
  • It works beautifully as a car conversation.
  • If you are less than six months in, play New Relationship Questions instead — you do not have enough firsts yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good anniversary game for couples?

This one, mostly because it needs no setup and produces a genuinely nice evening. Pull up your old messages while you play and it gets substantially better.

What if we remember things differently?

You will, and that is the game. Do not correct each other — compare the two versions and enjoy how little they match.

How long do we need to have been together?

Six months at minimum, and it gets better every year after that. Earlier than that, New Relationship Questions is the better fit.
